When the television shows go on hiatus, most working directors head for exotic vacation spots to decompress from the frantic season ... but not Guy Magar. He hits the road and travels the world giving his highly popular 2-day ACTION/CUT FILMMAKING SEMINARS. I recently did the 12-hour DVD version of the Action/Cut seminar and was blown away. This is easily the best resource for developing your chops outside of working your way up through the DGA program ... and a hell of a lot faster.

Guy's methodology is as solid as it gets and is equally valid for every type of narrative production. He takes you step by step, from script to screen through the real process with a real movie. Guy's style is entertaining and casual yet by the time he's done with you, you'll never look at directing quite the same way again.

If you can't catch his seminar live, I recommend his intensive home DVD course. If I had more thumbs I'd use'em all to rate this seminar.

On second thought, no don't take their seminar or read their books. In fact, these guys are terrible and I recommend that you don't have anything to do with them. Yeah, that's it, they're terrible and you shouldn't watch their free, online tutorials or read their two most excellent books by Jon Gress.

The Florida FX Seminars cover FX Fundamentals, In-Camera FX, Practical FX, Model Miniature FX, Compositing, 2D & 3D FX, Live Action Integration FX and darn near everything you need to know to interfere with my business.

You'd think that the guy that wrote the ARRI lighting handbook would know a thing or two about lighting. Well he does. His name is Bill Holshevnikoff and his four tape series is one of the best ways to learn good lighting outside of a five year ASC internship.

The POWER OF LIGHTING VIDEO SERIES covers lighting theories and techniques for film and video production and is indispensable for those venturing into the esoteric world of digital production.

Bill's Power of Lighting Workshop Series teaches advanced lighting theories and techniques to hundreds of film and video professionals every year. It will help bring the unmistakable look of professionalism to your work whether you're shooting miniDV or Hi-Definition.

Bill was kind enough to write a chapter on using the Light Meter in digital production for the upcoming, second edition of my book.

These two & three-day, soup-to-nuts sessions devoted to either DV, HDV or HD filmmaking cover the principle aspects of directing, camerawork, lighting, sound recording and editing.
