Hollywood Hook-Up

Hollywood Hook-Up

I get ask to hook people up with a job on a movie several times a week. My suggestion is almost always to get a PA job and work your way up.

There is no shortcut to success or substitute for experience. By working as a PA you'll learn the ropes and figure out if there really is a future for you in this industry.

People just standing around on a set are an annoyance to everyone. They get in the way of shots and eyelines, and since they don't understand the metaphor, they generally cause at least one or two bad shots before the collective vibe coming from the cast and crew forces them to leave. I have never, and would never invite anyone to a set who wasn't experienced.

PA's are the only brand of non-experienced personnel that are truly tolerated. They very often cause a shot to be aborted because they are standing in an actor's eyeline, or the inadvertently bump into a crane or trip over some cables. Since they are PA's, and part of the production family, their transgressions are forgiven by all.

Some of the most famous and most successful people in the industry once worked as a Production Assistant for little or no money.
